1938 Minjian Chubanshe

Huang Yao establishes his publishing company, Minjian Chubanshe. He published at least 15 books and 4 known woodblock prints from this Publishing Company. A good description of Minjian Chubanshe was written by Chen Yibo in his article, 'Niu Bizi in Wartime' 1942 in the Central Newspaper, Guiyang.

September 1938 ‘New Lianhuanhua’ series was published

‘New Lianhuanhua’ series was published by Huang Yao’s publishing company, ‘Minjian Chubanshe’ (People’s Publisher). Huang Yao was the editor for this series of more than 10 comic books. These two examples, the titles are clearly Huang Yao’s handwriting but the cartoons are not. Only two of the ten listed titles have been found.

The book, “Art and Aesthetics in Chinese Popular Prints” came into conversation between Carolyn and Dr. Felicity Lufkin, sometime in 2002 or 2003. Dr. Lufkin mentioned that she had seen a pair of woodblock prints done by Huang Yao. This is the first time that Carolyn had ever heard of woodblock prints produced by her grandfather. Quickly she ordered the book on Amazon and when it arrived she was not disappointed.

Among the group of cartoonists, there is a character known as ‘Sanmao’ and another character known as ‘Niu Bizi’. The cartoonists of both these characters are able to draw their cartoon characters in just a few strokes and they are both famous because of their cartoon characters.
